Two Iranian short films destinated in Cannes as Nominees

Artnewspress: “Umbra” and “Like a good kid” from Iran are going to compete in the Cinéfondation and the short section in 71st Cannes Film Festival.

Online Art Cinema Service: The organizers of the Cannes Film Festival had announced the nominees of the short films and Cinéfondation the day before the main competition section films were announced and the jury, headed by French director Bertrand Bonello, selects the two winners.

This year, the selection committee received 3943 short films that eight films, including seven fiction and one animation, has been chosen from Australia, China, France, Iran, Japan, the Philippines, Poland and the United States that are meant to compete in this section. “Umbra”, directed by Saeed Jafarian and produced by Rambod Javan is Iranian agent of this part.

Mahsa Alafar and Banipal Shomun have played roles in a 14-minute film that as it summarized in the movie review:” Saman would be disappeared and Saba steps into the darkness.”

“Umbra” has the chance to win the Palme d’Or at this year’s Best Short Film Award, which will be announced May 19 at the closing ceremony.

Meanwhile, the Cinéfondation selection committee selected 17 films (14 fiction and three animations) from the 2426 films that have been presented by film schools all around the world.

Fourteen countries have been selected from four continents, including a 20-minute film “Like a good kid” directed by Arian Wazir-e-Daftari from Tehran University of Arts.

In summary it can be mentioned that the story tells about Sarah ,22-year-old babysitter, who takes care of a five-year-old kid named Matin.

On one of her working days, Matin tells her a story and Sarah decides to steal from the house. Shadi Karamroudi, Yazdan Koukabi Saba and Negar Abedi play roles in “Like a good kid”, a product of the Iranian Youth Cinema Association and Majid Barzegar is the producer of the film.

Previous Vaziri’s short film, “Not yet…”, has won various awards such as Pusan Short Film Festival Grand Prix in Korea, Best Asian Short Film from Simorgh of the Fajr global Film Festival, merit of Independent Short Film Feast for Best Experimental Film, Big Section Award the International Competition and Art and Experience Award from Tehran Short Film Festival.

The Cinéfondation section will award three awards, with the winners being announced May 17 at Bonuel Hall. The first, second and third prize winners will respectively receive € 15,000 € 11,250,000, and € 7,500. The debut of the first award-winning director’s first feature film at the Cannes Film Festival is already conclusive.

Last year’s “Animal” directed by Bahman and Bahram Ark from Iran won the second prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

The Cinéfondation section is founded by the former Cannes Film Festival director Gilles Jacobs in 1998.

The organizers of this section aim to discover new filmmakers each year from 15 to 20 short and semi-short films directed by filmmaking students from all around the world.

The 70th Cannes Film Festival will be held May 8-19. Australian actress Keith Blanchett, who has won two Oscars, is the head of the jury in this Cannes Festival.
