Ruben Fleischer is the latest director being eyed to helm Uncharted

ARTNEWSPRESS: Here we go again. Sony has been trying to get a big-screen adaptation of the Uncharted video-game franchise off the ground for over a decade, but with a revolving door of directors coming and going, including David O. Russell, Neil Burger, Seth Gordon, Shawn Levy, Dan Trachtenberg, and Travis Knight, it seems that the project just doesn’t want to materialize.

According to Deadline, Sony is hoping that UNCHARTED will stick to schedule and have been looking at director’s to replace the recently departed Travis Knight. At the top of the list is VENOM and ZOMBIELAND: DOUBLE TAP director Ruben Fleischer. Will Fleischer finally be the one to bring the saga of treasure hunter Nathan Drake to the big-screen, or will he merely be one of the many who have found themselves briefly attached to the project? Honestly, I have no idea, but it could all be a moot point anyway as there hasn’t yet been any negotiations between Fleischer and Sony, but given the director’s past with the studio, it’s understandable why they might turn to him in their time of need.

Tom Holland is still attached to play Nathan Drake, with Mark Wahlberg also attached to star as Victor “Sully” Sullivan, “an American treasure hunter, fortune seeker and businessman, as well as a friend, mentor and father figure to Drake.” As a side-note, Wahlberg was originally set to play Nathan Drake when David O. Russell was attached to direct nearly a decade ago. How the time flies. Production on UNCHARTED is expected to kick off sometime this year with a script from Rafe Judkins, Art Marcum & Matt Holloway, and Sony is hoping to get this one in the can before Holland shoots the next SPIDER-MAN film.
