SAG Awards 2020 Nominations: See the Full List of Nominees

ARTNEWSPRESS: The Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations were announced Wednesday morning, boosting a few actors’ chances as they race toward the Academy Awards in February. This year, all eyes will be on key races like best actor and best-supporting actress, which sees Adam Driver (Marriage Story) sparring with Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) and Jennifer Lopez (Hustlers) competing against Laura Dern (Marriage Story), respectively. However, this year’s SAG nominations also boosted the chances of actors who have been falling behind in the race, like Taron Egerton for best actor in Rocketman, Jamie Foxx for best-supporting actor in Just Mercy and Lupita Nyong’o for best actress in Us.

Also in the best-actress race? Cynthia Erivo for her portrayal of Harriet Tubman in the biopic Harriet. Along with Nyong’o, the duo has (hopefully) disrupted the notion that this year’s best-actress Oscar race will have a nearly all-white lineup.. However, all signs still point to Renée Zellweger, who was also nominated for a best-actress SAG on Wednesday for Judy, as the front-runner in this particular race, beating out competition that includes Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story) and Charlize Theron (Bombshell).

The Bombshell cast also received a nod for outstanding performance by a cast, as well as best-supporting-actress nods for Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie, a sign that the guild is fairly fond of this explosive film. Conventional wisdom says Robbie is the more likely of the two to land the eventual best-supporting-actress Oscar nod, with Kidman getting edged out in favor of Lopez and Dern, as well as Johansson (for her turn in Jojo Rabbit), but anything is possible at this point in the game.

The SAG nods did calcify a few categories, however. Driver and Phoenix are still the major contenders for best actor, while Brad Pitt still seems to be a lock for best-supporting actor for Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood. Christian Bale has also sped into the competition more securely, landing a best-actor nomination for his performance in Ford v Ferrari.

The cast of The Irishman, Martin Scorsese’s star-studded hitman tale, also fared well as expected, landing nods for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture, as well as individual nods for stars like Joe Pesci and Al Pacino. Robert De Niro was snubbed, but will be celebrated with a lifetime achievement award, so he’ll be feted regardless.

Meanwhile, some films are starting to look like shakier prospects. The Two Popes didn’t seem to make an impression on SAG voters, with stars Jonathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins getting firmly shut out of the competition. Similarly, Greta Gerwig’s Little Women was entirely snubbed, despite its buzzy ensemble cast, including Dern, Meryl Streep, and Timothée Chalamet. Saoirse Ronan, a perennial awards-season favorite long considered a potential Oscar nominee for her portrayal of the headstrong Jo March, was also bumped from the best-actress race.

A SAG nomination is considered a strong bellwether for Oscar potential since the ultimate winners are voted on by members of the guild, a group that overlaps with the Academy voting pool. However, there have been exceptions here and there; Regina King has never been nominated for an individual SAG award, but went on to win best-supporting actress at the 2019 Oscars.

On the TV front, comedies like Barry and Fleabag lapped up key nods, while favored dramas like The Crown and miniseries Chernobyl also earned nominations. Apple TV+ newcomer The Morning Show made its SAG debut, earning three acting nods for Jennifer Aniston, Steve Carell, and Billy Crudup.

The nominations were announced Wednesday morning by Danai Gurira and America Ferrera. The SAG Awards will take place on January 19, 2020.
