In Fantastic 4 and Fantastic 4 and the Silver Surfer, the British Ioan Gruffudd played the character of the elastic man. With these two Marvel films in which he starred alongside Jessica Alba, Chris Evans and Michael Chicklis, the man who has just celebrated his fiftieth birthday no doubt rightly thought that he would see the doors to a great Hollywood career opening before him. Unfortunately, this was not the case…
Because after these two superheroic adventures, Ioann Gruffudd (with two “f”s and two “d”) has not really confirmed. We tell you here what happened to the actor who, before being elastic, stood out in the credits of Titanic, The Black Hawk Down, King Arthur and 102 Dalmatians.
After his stint at Marvel, Ioan Gruffudd was approached to play the iconic role of James Bond, but it was ultimately Daniel Craig who was preferred. Has the Briton’s luck run out? Regardless, the rest is modest with appearances in Amazing Grace, The TV Set and The Secret of Moonacre.
In 2008, Ioan Gruffudd returned to the forefront by playing British Prime Minister Tony Blair in W.: The Unlikely President, a biopic by Oliver Stone and dedicated to George W. Bush. But he struggles to really find his way back to success, only showing himself in An Unexpected Gift, Sanctum or the comedy How to Kill Your Boss?.
We actually had to wait until 2014 to see Ioan Gruffudd really bounce back. It was in fact during this period that he obtained the main role in the fantasy-police series Forever, in which he played a forensic doctor… immortal! The ABC show was very well received but, unfortunately for the actor, canceled after just one season.
After this Forever which did not last long, Ioan Gruffudd stars in the romantic comedy How to seduce a friend. A film in which he plays opposite Chris Evans, his former partner in Fantastic Four who became a major Marvel figure by playing Captain America. Cruel irony of history…
After starring in the disaster film San Andreas alongside Dwayne Johnson, Ioan Gruffudd found success again playing a forensic doctor for ABC, in the series Dr. Harrow. The show had three seasons, broadcast between 2018 and 2021.
Ioan Gruffud recently starred in the series The Girl and the Night, a screen adaptation of Guillaume Musso’s best-seller which did not completely wow the critics. Can the one who never regained the popularity of the Fantastic 4 era still bounce back? The light will perhaps come from Bad Boys 4, Gruffudd being announced in the cast of this new police adventure led by the duo composed of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. Theatrical release next June.
