Artnewspress: Sam Mendes and 1917 were already big players this awards season, picking up various awards. Now the director has won another, scoring the top prize for feature film from the Directors Guild of America.
The trophy puts Mendes even further into contention to win Best Director at the Oscars, though there is still room for a surprise when the ceremony rolls around on 9 February.
Honey Boy’s Alma Har’el won the First-Time Feature award, while Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert scored the Documentary prize.
On the TV front, Nicole Kassell won well-deserved kudos for directing the first episode of HBO’s Watchmen, while Bill Hader took home a gong for Barry episode ronny/lily. The US service also got TV Movie/Miniseries, thanks to Johan Renck’s win for Chernobyl.
Elsewhere, James Burrows and Andy Fisher were winners in the Variety/Talk/News/Sports Specials category for their work on the live recreations of TV sitcom classics All In The Family and The Jeffersons, while Saturday Night Live’s Don King won in the Variety/Talk/News/Sports – Regularly Scheduled Programming category. Disney Plus got its first trophy, as Encore’s Jason Cohen took an award, with Amy Schatz and Song Of Parkland the winner in Children’s Programs for 2019. Finally, Spike Jonze was triumphant in Commercials for A Squarespace ad.
