The Cannes Film Festival, still considered the most prestigious film festival in the world, is entering its 72nd season as it attracts the attention of filmmakers and cinema lovers all around the world, lasting for more than ten days.

According to Art News Press, the 72nd Cannes Film Festival will start tomorrow, from May 9 to May 25. Here’s we look at the most important events ahead of us in the Cannes Film Festival:

 

The Poster Reminiscent of the Mother of French New Wave

Following the tradition of last few years, the officials of Cannes Film Festival also hold a poster of one of the greatest filmmakers this year. The poster, entitled “Agnes, in the Shining Sun”, pays tribute to the late Agnes Varda, depicting her on the shoulders of one of the technical agents making her first feature film, The “La Point Courte” at the age of 25. Varda, who played a significant role in defining the new wave of French cinema with her films such as “La Point Courte” “Cleo from 5 to 7” and “Happiness”, died at the age of ninety.

The Independent American filmmaker Jim Jarmusch’s scary movie “The Dead Don’t Die” will be screened as the opening film of the 70th Cannes International Film Festival. The film will be screened in the competition section of the Cannes Film Festival and will be the first film to compete for the Palme d’Or. The cast includes Bill Murray, Adam Driver, Tilda Swinton, Steve Buscemi, and Danny Glover.

This year the Cannes film festival hosts the star-studded list of world-renowned directors and cinematographers. Pedro Almodovar with “Pain and Glory”, Dardenne Brothers with their newest film ” Young Ahmad”, Xavier Dolan with “Matthias & Maxim”, Ken Loach the winner of two Gold Palm Awards with “Sorry We Missed You”, American director Terrence Malick with ” A Hidden Life”, Jim Jarmusch with “Dead Don’t Die” and Abdul Latif Kashishe with “Mektoub My Love: Canto Uno” are the top candidates to win the Palme d’Or 2019.

Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” which was unclear to be present in the Cannes Film Festival, finally reached the Red Carpet this year with figures such as Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and Al Pacino, doubling the charm of the festival.

The story of “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” is about the “Manson” gang led by Charles Manson, who shot and killed several people in a nightclub owned by prominent Polish-French director Roman Polanski in August 1969. One of the victims was Polanski’s pregnant wife, Sharon Tate. Tarantino’s film also competes for the Gold Palm Award.

Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, the Oscar Winner served as Jury president in the competition section of Cannes Festival. The Oscar went to him by “Birdman” and “The revenant”. He will be the first Mexican director to become the president jury. “Amores Perros” “Babel” and “Biutiful” are Inarito’s films at the festival that have won several awards.

Paul Palikowski the winner of Polish Oscar, Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos, American director screenwriter and editor Kelly Rickard, Italian director and screenwriter Alice Rohwacher, American actress Elle Fanning, Burkina Faso actress and director Maimuna Ndiaye, French comic book writer Enki Bilal, and French director and screenwriter Robin Campillo are among the Cannes Film Festival Juries.

Lebanese filmmaker Nadine Labaki will serve as the jury president of Un Certain Regard section, and French author and director Claire Denny will serve as jury president of the 72nd  Short Film Festival in Cannes Film Festival and a Cornerstone Film.

The second round fight between Cannes and Netflix

The Cannes Film Festival and Netflix have again reached a deadlock this year and Cannes Film Festival will not host any of the company’s products at the festival. Last year Cannes Film Festival missed out to screen films such as “Roma,” “Soggy,” First Man” and “A Star is Born,” due to its conflict with Netflix company.  Other new films such as ” The Irish man” directed by Martin Scorsese casting by Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci were the victims of this discrepancy. The former Cannes Film Festival General Delegate Thierry Fremaux, said in an interview that Scorsese’s film would not reach Cannes due to its unfinished technical process.

The problem is that, according to Netflix’s policies, the films of this company are either only available online (with no screening in theaters) or have to be limited to the cinemas and websites of this network. This policy is not acceptable by some film festivals including Cannes. According to Cannes rules, the films in the competitive section of the festival must be screened in French cinemas after the Cannes Film Festival.

 

Alain Delon and the Controversial Gold Palm dOr

After leading figures such as Jean Moreau, Woody Allen, Bernardo Bertolucci, Jane Fonda, Clint Eastwood, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Manuel Di Oliviera, Jean-Pierre Leo, it is the time for the legendary French and world cinema actor Alain Delon to win the Cannes Film Festival’s Honorable Gold Award, casting in the previous winner movie “Leopard”, made by Luchino Visconti (1963). In response to award Alain Delon, the American Women Association and Hollywood criticized Alain Delon award for his commenting on violence against women as well as supporting the rise of right wing in France. Cannes officials have announced that the legendary Gold Palm will be awarded to this legendary actor what so ever.

Mara Dona’s Mafia life on the Cannes Film Festival Screen

British director Asif Kapadia unveils the documentary life of Mara Dona, the Argentinean myth of the world football history in the out of competitive section of the Cannes Film Festival this year. The 4-hour film was made based on the Mara Dona’s personal archive and looks at the life of Diego Mara Dona as one of the most important sport figures in and outside of football field during his infamous life in Naples, Italy. He made miracles in the field, but when the magic finally came to an end, he became a prisoner in the crime-ridden city of Naples, Italy. This documentary is the story of an unforgettable life of glorious talent and a tale of glory, despair and betrayal, corruption and ultimately redemption.

 

John Carpenter

Praising the Master of Horror Cinema with Golden Coach Award

John Carpenter, a well-known director of horror cinema, receives the Cannes Coach Prize at the two-week independent director fortnight section. Carpenter has directed classic horror films such as ‘Halloween”, “The Fog”, “Christine” and “Escape from New York”. Past recipients of the Golden Coach Award include Martin Scorsese, Werner Herzog, Jia Zhangke, Jane Campion and Agnes Varda.

 

From Kubrick’s “Shining” to De sica’s “Miracle” in the classic section

This year the classic section of the 72nd Cannes Film Festival hosts a brilliant collection of restored versions of major world cinema releases, the most notable of which being “Shining” directed by Stanley Kubrick.

“Miracle in Milan” by Vittorio De Sica, winner of the Palme d’Or 1951, “Love of the Blonde” by “Milos Foreman”, “Tony” by “Jean Renoir” (1934), “Moulin Rouge” by John Huston, (1952), “They Loved Life” by Andrzej Wajda (2), “Doors” directed by Oliver Stone (1991), ” Diary of A Nurse” directed by Jin Tao and the first long and colorful animated film “Panda and the Magic Serpent” directed by Taiji Yabushita are other films in this section.

The restored version of three films by Mexican-Spanish director and screenwriter Luis Bunuel, including “Los olvidados” (1950), “Nazarin” (1958) and “Age of Gold” (1930), will also be unveiled in the classic section of Cannes.

 

Rithy Panh determines the winner of the Camera dOr

Cambodian director Rithy Panh, will be president of the camera d’Or jury to award the camera d’Or prize to all feature films playing in official sections (Competition, out of competition, Un Certain Regard, Special Screening, Midnight, Short Films and Cinefondation) and also in two separate sections of Critics Week and Directors fortnight. Other jury members of the Gold Camera Awards are Four French filmmakers, including Alice Diop, Sandrin Marques, Benoit Delhomme and Nicholas Naegelen.

 

Sylvester Stallone Returns with “Rocky 5” to Cannes Film Festival

Sylvester Stallone, the old action movie maker will return to Cannes Film Festival with his new film “Rocky 5: Last Blood”. Parts of the film completed a few months ago, will be screened with Stallone’s presence, followed by a remastered version of “Rambo: First Blood” directed by Ted Kotcheff (1981).

 

The Closing Festival with “Specials”

Cannes Film Festival officials have announced that they will no longer have the title of ” The Closing film” and will unveil the last film as “The Last Screening”. This year, “Specials” directed by Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano, starring Vincent Casel and Reda kateb and Vincent Cassel will close this year’s Cannes festival being screened in the Grand Lumiere Hall.
