Riverdale season 7 star Madelaine Petsch teases Cheryl’s fate going into the final season after the season 6 cliffhanger seemingly left her for dead.

Riverdale season 7 star Madelaine Petsch teases Cheryl’s fate in the show’s final season after she was suggested to have not survived in the season 6 finale cliffhanger. Since premiering in early 2017 on The CW, the live-action adaptation of the Archie Comics has produced over 100 episodes. Petsch is also set to star in Jane, a new thriller set to be released in theaters on August 26.

Riverdale follows a group of teenagers as they unravel the secrets of the titular town, starting with a murder mystery and evolving into plot points that include cults, magic, superpowers, and time travel. The season 6 finale saw a comet threatening to destroy the town, with Camila Mendes’ Veronica siphoning the superpowers of the gang to give to Petsch’s Cheryl, so she could destroy the comet, leaving her fate unknown as the gang is sent back to 1955. With Riverdale season 7 right around the corner, viewers are eager to see what story beats the writers have planned to top everything that came before.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Riverdale season 7 star Madelaine Petsch teased Cheryl’s fate from the comet blast, saying fans would have to wait till season 7 to know for sure. She goes on to say the writing of the show is very fun and chaotic, and how it taught her to go with the flow of the story’s developments. She also mentions enjoying shooting the scene where she destroys the comet. Read her quote below:

I enjoy it. I love stunts and I love doing work like that, so to me, to have another one under my belt was fun. You just go along with the flow on that show and if you lean into it and you find the fun of it, then it’s all gravy and fun… Who knows if Cheryl survived the comet blast? She was real close to that. I guess we’ll find out in season 7 of Riverdale!

If Petsch does return to the series, with the cast returning to 1955, it’ll be interesting to see how Cheryl would reappear in Riverdale season 7 with the time travel elements to consider. It’s said that no one remembers the events of the comet except for Cole Sprouse’s Jughead, suggesting that Cheryl’s heroics may go unacknowledged by everyone else, including herself. With Riverdale’s twisty relationship with continuity and shared universes, it seems reasonable enough that an explanation could be found for Cheryl’s return.

With Riverdale season 7 drawing the show to a close, both the writers and fans will have to ponder where the characters end up after the unconventional storyline and wild character beats of recent seasons. It’s difficult to say where any of the characters will end their stories by the series finale, much less if any of the characters will get happy endings. All that being said, it stands to reason that Cheryl will find some way to join the rest of the cast and return for Riverdale season 7 on the wild ride the final episodes will undoubtedly be.
